Recently I’ve done some collaborative work with Brisbane composer Tom Green (aka Praxis Axis). Tom wrote a piece for the Barega Sax Quartet to premiere at the Australasian Saxophone and Clarinet Conference earlier this year – check out the awesome video. He has a unique style that seamlessly blends elements of glitchy steampunkish electronica with live instrumental performance, a language evident even in his chamber ensemble writing. Head to the Praxis Axis soundcloud and check out the sax/synth piece we recently recorded, available as a free download (hooray)! Looking forward to future projects where we may combine forces once again…
It was fantastic to catch up with some talented musicians, perform, and hear some great new music at the 2013 Australasian Saxophone and Clarinet Conference. A source of great inspiration for my writing throughout the second half of the year. Somewhere amidst the busy three days, six of my recent works were performed (five of which were premieres). Check out this recording of ‘Deus Ex Machinist’ written for Barega Sax:
…’Clockwork Ghost’ was also part of a featured recital by Collusion:
Collusion’s woodwind extraordinaire Diana Tolmie will be performing my new bass clarinet/tape work ‘Shapeshifter’ at the International Clarinet Association Fest 2013 this week in Assisi. A challenging piece – stay tuned for a recording of this later in the year!
I’m thrilled to be performing – and having my works performed – at the 2013 Australasian Saxophone and Clarinet Conference in Sydney. Over the last few months I’ve worked hard to whip up a whopping total of 45 minutes of original music to be premiered by a number of incredible musicians throughout the conference. Check out these recitals if you’re in Sydney in July:
11th July
Fulcrum duo – Samrukia (for two baritone saxes)
Diana Tolmie – Shapeshifter (Bass clarinet and playback)
12th July
QLD Con Sax Orchestra – The Shaman
13th July
Andrew Ball (solo) – Grimoire of Machines (saxes and playback)
Barega sax quartet – Deus Ex Machinist

I was commissioned recently to write for talented Melbourne saxophonists Ali Fyffe and Matthew Hinchliffe. They’ll be premiering my new sax quartet ‘Antikythera Mechanism’ alongside other innovative new works in August. Please check out their Pozible campaign to stream the performance live – embracing technology to expand and broaden the audience of this new music! Brilliant!

If you’re in Brisbane on the 20th June – make sure to check out the Turnaround jazz club for a new works gig with the Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra. Featuring some of my (rather challenging) big band music in a program of new Australian compositions performed by an ensemble of fantastic Brisbane musicians.
And more exciting projects are well on their way for the rest of the year – stay tuned for updates…
